Got Execution?

Here a few questions to consider when you are worrying about the quality of your organization's execution:

Flawless execution results from thoughtful hand-offs.

Where's the opportunity in your organization to increase the success of moving from strategy to execution?

How extensively do people know each others' priorities?

Ensure that each individual and each group knows not only their own priorities but also those of other groups.  Help people get the broad view of what is happening in the organization.   The more people understand about other parts of the system, the more they can act in partnership -- taking others into account.

How often are the Do-ers involved in the strategy process?

The more the do-ers understand the urgency, rationale and context of the decisions, the easier they will be able to adapt their behavior for delivery.   Do'ers who are included in the strategy thinking are more likely to create speedier execution.

How much do Strategists go where people are executing?

Have the idea people confront the real obstacles and opportunities inherent in execution.  Co-create solutions that minimize obstacles and amplify strengths.   A picture is worth more than a thousand words.  Strategy folks who ignore the realities of execution do so the company's peril.

Structure Your Meetings to Maximize Execution Best Practices

Structure your action planning meetings so that roughly a 20% of the meeting time is allotted at the end for checking understanding.

When people re-cap what they understand about their tasks, it's easy to catch misunderstandings and clarify points.

Best to catch misunderstandings before people charge out the door!
